What is Mastopexy?

Mastopexy is another name for a breast lift. This is a surgical procedure that lifts and tightens breast tissue that has sagged or lost its shape due to factors such as aging, pregnancy, nursing, heredity or sudden weight loss.

A Good Candidate for Mastopexy

A good candidate for breast lift surgery is a woman who is over 18, a non-smoker and in good mental and physical health. She is troubled by how her breasts have lost their shape and firmness, but she has realistic expectations about what the surgery can and cannot do.

Before the surgery, you will have a consultation with our talented plastic surgeon to make sure that mastopexy is appropriate for you. You may need to stop taking certain medications that interfere with healing from the surgery, have some lab tests performed and get a baseline mammogram both before and after the surgery. You should prepare your home for your recovery and have someone drive you home and stay with you for at least the first night.

A Closer Look at Mastopexy Surgery

Each procedure is customized based on the wants and needs of the patient. The doctor chooses their technique depending on the elasticity of your skin, the size and shape of the breasts and areolas and how much the breasts sag, among other factors.

Once you have been given anesthesia, the surgeon can go in and lift and resculpt the breast tissue, reposition the areola and nipple and remove any unwanted skin. The size of the areola may also be reduced by removing a margin of skin around it.

After surgery, you will need to wear a compression bandage or a special bra to support the breasts and promote healing. Before leaving the facility, you will be given instructions on how to take care of the breasts and dressings.

You can see some of the results of the mastopexy procedure right away, and as the weeks go on, you will see even more of the results of the surgery as your breasts are firmer and more youthful.
