What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is sometimes called lipoplasty, suction lipectomy or even liposculpture. This body contouring procedure is intended for both men and women and improves various shapes and proportions by removing undesirable fat deposits. The procedure is meant for body contouring. It is not a treatment of obesity. During liposuction, a specialized micro suction tube is inserted through a very small incision. Using gentle suction, fat cells are removed through this tube. Once removed, the fat is permanently removed. The best part is that there are no stitches! Loose inches immediately. There is little or no downtime. Call or email us today!

Types of Liposuction

Traditional Liposuction

Traditional liposuction, often referred to as suction-assisted liposuction or SAL, involves removing fat with a cannula attached to a suction apparatus. This method is widely used and versatile, making it an excellent choice for patients who want to target larger areas of fat. During the procedure, a small incision is made, and the cannula is inserted to extract fat from problem areas. This technique has been refined over the years, offering reliable results for many patients.

360 Liposuction

360 liposuction involves fat removal around the entire midsection rather than in small, isolated sections. This approach treats multiple areas in one session including the abdomen, flanks, and back. 360 liposuction can enhance the overall symmetry and shape of your body. This technique is particularly beneficial for patients looking to refine their waistline and achieve proportional results that look natural from every angle.

Smartlipo®

Laser-assisted liposuction is a recent technique that uses laser energy to liquefy fat. Smartlipo is a specific device that uses this laser technology for liposuction. The laser’s heat liquefies fat, making it easier to remove through small cannulas while also stimulating collagen production to tighten the skin in the treated area. Patients may choose Smartlipo for its combined benefits of fat removal and skin tightening, particularly in areas where loose skin is a concern. It’s an effective option for smaller, localized fat deposits, and it has less downtime compared to traditional methods because there is less trauma to the surrounding tissues.

Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction, or UAL, incorporates sound wave technology to disrupt fat and can be helpful in dense, fibrous tissue. This method makes fat removal more efficient in areas like the back or male chest, where tissue is tougher. UAL can also minimize trauma to surrounding tissues, reducing recovery time for some patients. The precise targeting of fat makes it a valuable option for those seeking contouring in hard-to-treat areas. It can also help tighten areas of loose skin.

Power Assisted Liposuction

Power-assisted liposuction, or PAL, is similar except that the cannula vibrates to increase efficiency. The vibrating technology helps loosen fat cells more quickly and makes the process smoother. It can also potentially shorten the procedure time. PAL is particularly effective for larger treatment areas or for patients who require more extensive fat removal. Its precision also reduces strain on the surrounding tissues, which may contribute to a more comfortable recovery.

Why get Liposuction?

You Have Stubborn Fat

If you’ve tried everything—consistent dieting, regular exercise, and a healthy lifestyle—but still have stubborn fat that won’t go away, liposuction might be a solution to consider. Some areas, like the abdomen, flanks, or thighs, can retain fat deposits even after weight loss. Liposuction can specifically target and remove these areas of fat, giving you refined results that other methods cannot achieve on their own.

Improved Body Proportions

Sometimes, it’s not just about removing fat but about improving how your body looks overall. Uneven fat distribution can make certain areas appear out of proportion with the rest of your body. Liposuction can help sculpt a more balanced silhouette by addressing problem areas and enhancing your natural contours.

Target Specific Areas

Liposuction allows for precise targeting of specific areas. Whether it’s under the chin, around the arms, or in the inner thighs, this treatment offers the flexibility to help you in your unique situation. It’s ideal for patients who want to focus on one or two areas without affecting the rest of the body.

Accentuate Muscles

For individuals who want their muscles to stand out more, liposuction can remove the fat that’s hiding those natural contours. By carefully removing fat from areas like the abdomen, arms, or thighs, liposuction can create a more defined and athletic look. This is particularly popular among patients who have already achieved strong muscle tone but want to enhance the visibility of their results.

What Are the Benefits of Liposuction?

  • Liposuction is safe, quick, and affordable
  • There is minimal downtime
  • The fat is permanently removed. The fat does not come back!
  • Liposuction can jump-start your exercise program

Am I a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

The best candidates for liposuction & body sculpting are men and women who:

  • Are in good health.
  • Have tried dieting and exercising.
  • Have distinct areas of localized fats.
  • Have realistic expectations.
  • Realize that liposuction is not a treatment for obesity

What Areas Can Be Treated With Liposuction?

The following areas can safely undergo liposuction:

  • Neck / Chin
  • Chest / Breast
  • Abdomen (Stomach area)
  • Waist / Love handle
  • Bra rolls
  • Back
  • Hips
  • Thigh (Inner and outer)
  • Knee and legs

For best results, Dr. Okoro will blend treated areas with adjacent areas. While liposuction can dramatically enhance contours in areas that do not respond to diet and exercise, it is not a treatment for obesity. In fact, liposuction is most successful in patients with good skin tone who are at or near their ideal body weight.

Which Type of Fat Is Removed by Liposuction?

There are 2 types of fat in the body. Only the subcutaneous fat is removed by the body.

  • Subcutaneous Fat: The fat that lies just under the skin; it acts as a buffer to support the skin and is an energy storage material. This is the fat treated with liposuction.
  • Visceral Fat: This is the fat that is packed around the organs. Visceral fat is not accessible by liposuction and can only be reduced by diet and exercise or after bariatric weight loss surgery. Visceral fat is highly associated with diabetes, hypertension, cancer, etc.

What Happens During a Liposuction Consultation?

During your consultation, Dr. Okoro will review with you the different liposuction techniques that are in use today. To determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction, Dr. Okoro will review your health history and perform an examination during your consultation. He will assess skin laxity, fat deposits, and existing contours. We will also take preoperative photos during your visit. During the consultation, Dr. Okoro will understand your goals and desires and he will review available options and techniques to meet those goals.

How Is Liposuction Surgery Performed?

Essentially all liposuction procedures involve the injection of liposuction fluid, also known as tumescent fluid. This injected solution minimizes bruising and blood loss through a medication called epinephrine and also helps control postoperative pain through lidocaine. Liposuction performed with this solution is often called tumescent liposuction. All liposuction techniques require several very small incisions to insert the associated cannula.

Choosing the Right Techniques

Dr. Okoro will outline the advantages and disadvantages of these different techniques as they relate to your treatment goals. We usually perform liposuction as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia without or without sedation. It can also be performed under general anesthesia, depending on the extent of treatment.

We offer both awake and twilight sedation liposuction. Some people prefer to go to sleep for their liposuction. Dr. Okoro will discuss all of these options with you during your consultation.

What to Expect During Surgery

During your liposuction procedure, small incisions, typically a few millimeters long, are made in the targeted areas and carefully placed to minimize visibility. The chosen method, such as power-assisted liposuction with a vibrating cannula or Smartlipo using laser technology, is then used to break down the fat for easier removal. A thin cannula is inserted and moved in a controlled back-and-forth motion to suction out the fat while shaping the area for smooth results. Most procedures take one to three hours, depending on the areas being treated. You’ll also receive detailed instructions for your recovery to help you achieve the best possible results.

What Can You Expect After Liposuction?

We instruct all liposuction patients to wear a compression garment after surgery to reduce swelling. Bruising and numbness are variable but always temporary. Light exercise is encouraged soon after surgery but strenuous activity is limited for at least several weeks. Patients may drive and return to work once they discontinue narcotic pain medicine.

Caring for Yourself After Surgery

Before your surgery, make sure to set up a comfortable recovery area with extra pillows, loose clothing, and essentials like water and snacks within reach. Once you are home, sleep on your back with your head and upper body elevated to reduce swelling and support healing. Use extra pillows to avoid rolling onto any treated areas during the night.

Showering is typically allowed after a few days; follow specific instructions for keeping incisions clean and dry. Avoid scrubbing the area, and pat your skin gently with a clean towel to prevent irritation. Replace your compression garment promptly after showering to maintain support.

How to Maintain Your Liposuction Results

Maintaining a stable weight is important after liposuction to preserve your results. While the removed fat cells won’t return, weight gain can cause the remaining fat cells to expand, potentially altering your contours. A balanced diet focused on lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains can help prevent future weight fluctuations.

Regular exercise, including both cardio and strength training, supports your body’s shape and promotes long-term health. Staying hydrated and managing stress also help with weight loss and maintenance by supporting overall wellness.

Other Frequently Asked Questions About Liposuction

Will the Fat Removed Come Back?

After puberty, the body does not create new fat cells. The fat that is removed from liposuction is permanently removed. It does not come back. However, the remaining fat may get bigger if you gain additional weight.

Is Liposuction Painful?

Liposuction is not a painless procedure. During the procedure, you will receive pain medicine, relaxing medicine, and antibiotics. The tumescent fluid also provides numbing of the liposuction area. Many of our patients say that they would do it again.

There is some discomfort after the procedure. We will provide pain medication to help you with any discomfort after the procedure.

Will I Have Loose Skin After Liposuction?

Whether or not you have loose skin after liposuction depends on your skin’s elasticity and the amount of fat removed. If your skin has good elasticity, it’s likely to contract naturally around your new contours. However, if your skin has lost elasticity due to age, weight fluctuations, or other factors, you may notice some looseness. In these cases, treatments like Smartlipo can help tighten the skin as fat is removed. For more significant sagging, additional procedures like a tummy tuck may be recommended. The loose skin can also be treated with non-surgical treatments like Ultherapy or ThermiTight.

Liposuction vs. CoolSculpting®: What’s the Difference?

Liposuction offers direct, manual removal of fat cells through surgery. CoolSculpting is a non-invasive treatment that freezes and destroys fat cells over time. While CoolSculpting requires no incisions or downtime, results are more gradual and typically less extensive than liposuction. We can help determine which option is better based on your goals and the areas you’d like to address.

Can Liposuction Improve Cellulite or Stretch Marks?

Liposuction is effective for removing fat, but it doesn’t directly treat cellulite or stretch marks. Cellulite is caused by tight fibrous bands beneath the skin that push underlying fat upwards while stretch marks result from damaged collagen. Liposuction can create smoother contours, which might reduce the appearance of these issues in some cases, but in other cases, it can make cellulite more pronounced. If cellulite or stretch marks are a primary concern, other treatments like skin tightening or laser therapy may be more effective.

Is Liposuction Covered By Insurance?

Most health insurance plans will not cover liposuction, related complications, or another surgery to revise the appearance of your body. Please review your health insurance policy.

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

The cost of liposuction varies based on the extent of your surgery and the cost of any additional surgery. The average cost of liposuction is around $2000. Remember, the total cost depends on the number of areas needing liposuction. Everyone is different. The best way to know the cost of your liposuction is to be evaluated during a consultation. To make liposuction affordable for you, we offer patient financing plans, so be sure to ask.

Your Satisfaction Involves More Than Just a Fee
