What is a Keloid?
A keloid is a kind of raised scar. Unlike other scars, a keloid continues slowly growing and can become bigger than the original injury. A keloid can be itchy or painful, and a keloid that develops on a joint or large area can impair the patient’s mobility. Keloids are notoriously difficult to treat, for they can come back after being removed. The surgeon will, therefore, have to carefully choose a method to ensure the permanent removal of the keloid.
How are Keloids Treated?
There are three main treatment options for keloids:
• Corticosteroid injection
• Surgery
• Cryoshape keloid treatment
Cryoshape is a technology approved by the FDA for treating keloids. It is a hand-held device with a cannula or probe attached to it. Most patients need only one treatment to get the desired results. However, it all depends on the unique case, and results vary based on a number of factors.
Is it Possible to Prevent Keloids?
Keloids typically develop after an injury. A person with a history of keloids will have to watch any injuries and monitor the resultant scars. Since people of color are more likely to develop keloids, they need to be particularly vigilant.
Georgia Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery proudly offers keloid removal treatment. We can also provide clients with tips and tools regarding prevention and other ways to avoid the need for keloid removal in the first place.
