Exploring the Differences Between Male and Female Breast Procedures

Breast procedures aim to enhance the appearance of your chest, creating a more flattering figure overall. While many of these procedures focus on enlarging the breasts, others focus on reducing the breast size. The overall goal is to give you a breast shape and size that matches your figure and makes you feel like an improved version of yourself.

At Georgia Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, we provide breast procedures for both women and men. Continue reading to explore the differences between female breast surgeries and male breast surgeries, including treatments like breast lifts and pectoral implants.

Female Breast Procedures

The most common breast procedures are those performed on female patients. There are a variety of different breast surgeries that can help women achieve their body goals or feel more comfortable with their shape. The most popular of these treatments are breast lift, augmentation, and reduction.

Breast Lift

One of the most frequently performed breast procedures is the breast lift. The purpose of a breast lift is to move the breasts upwards and put them in a perkier, more youthful position. Breast lift treatment is a great option for women who have seen a change in the position of their breasts with age or after childbirth.

When you have a breast lift, we make discreet incisions on or around the breast in order to remove loose skin. We may have to move the position of the nipples to match the new position of your breasts.

Breast Augmentation

If you have ever felt like your breasts should be bigger, you are not alone. Larger breasts are considered to be a desirable physical trait, and many women look to breast augmentation to achieve it.

What is breast augmentation? Also known as a “breast enlargement,” breast augmentation uses either saline or silicone implants to increase the size of the breasts and improve their shape.

During your breast augmentation, we make an incision under the breast or around the armpit. We then insert your implants through this incision into the appropriate placement. If you have saline implants, only the outer shell of the implant will be inserted, and then the implant will be filled with a saline solution once in place. Silicone implants are pre-filled and inserted under the skin whole.

Breast Reduction

While many women strive to increase their cup size, others wish to reduce the size of their breasts. Women who have naturally large breasts may find that their bust overwhelms the rest of their figure.

In severe instances, large breasts can cause back pain and impact your posture. Breast reduction surgery can also be used for women who have had previous breast augmentation but feel that their implants are too large for their bodies.

Breast reduction surgery removes volume from the breast and creates a smaller size that better suits your frame. We carefully remove fat cells and volume from the breast until we reach your desired size. Depending on how much volume is removed, we will likely have to remove excess remaining skin to meet the new size of the breasts.

Male Breast Procedures

A common misconception is that breast surgery is only for women. The reality is that breast procedures can also benefit men who want to enhance their figures. Breast surgery for men aims to create a more sculpted, muscular appearance to the chest. This can be achieved through pectoral implants, breast reduction, or both.

Pectoral Implants

Pectoral implants are a unique type of breast surgery that can increase the size of the chest and make the pectoral muscles appear to be more defined. Also known as “pec implants,” this surgery can even be used to correct asymmetry of the pectoral muscles.

When you get pectoral implant surgery, we make a discreet incision in the armpit area. We will place your custom-made implants just under the skin and above the natural pectoral muscle to create a larger, more sculpted look. If you want pectoral implants to resolve asymmetry, you will have a unique implant made to fit the naturally smaller side of your chest.

Breast Reduction

Another type of breast surgery that can benefit male patients is breast reduction. Men who have excess fat accumulation in their chests may have the appearance of enlarged breasts. This can also develop due to certain underlying medical concerns.

During a male breast reduction, we remove fat and tissue from the breasts and sculpt a more contoured shape. We may also move the position of the nipple to create a natural, defined shape that accentuates your chest.

How Do You Know If You Should Have Breast Surgery?

Whether you are a man or a woman, you might feel dissatisfied with how your figure looks. When this involves the shape or size of your chest, a breast procedure may be the best option. If you have any of the following concerns, you may benefit from getting breast surgery:

  • Asymmetry
  • Excessively large breasts
  • Naturally small breasts
  • Sagging or drooping breasts
  • Small, ill-defined pectoral muscles

The only way to confirm that you are a candidate for breast surgery is by consulting with a plastic surgeon specializing in these types of treatments.
