Labiaplasty for Less Pain during Sexual Intercourse

You’re embarrassed to admit it, but you think your labia is getting in the way when it comes to enjoying sexual intercourse. You have excess labia minora – the skin that hangs from your vagina. It rubs on your clothing when you wear pants that are tight. It often feels chafed or irritated. Worst of all, it interferes with your sex life, causing pain and discomfort. If you are experiencing problems with your labia and it’s bothering you, there is something you can do about it. Labiaplasty is a cosmetic procedure that can reduce the size of your labia and reshape it, helping you to feel more comfortable. As an added benefit, sexual intercourse can be enhanced.

What to Expect with Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is performed on an outpatient basis. You will be given a local anesthetic while one of our plastic surgeons performs the procedure unless it is determined that general anesthesia would be better for you. Various techniques may be used during your surgery. Labiaplasty is tailored to meet the needs of the individual. Your procedure may involve a reduction, sculpting, or a resection. The procedure tends to last between one and two hours.

After the procedure, you can expect swelling and some pain, but symptoms are mild. Your discomfort should be gone within two weeks. Expect to take four to seven days off from work. Following your procedure, you should stay away from tampons and thong underwear for at least six weeks. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for that amount of time as well. Complete healing takes about three months.

Are You a Candidate for Labiaplasty?

If issues with your labia are causing you pain during intercourse or discomfort at any time, labiaplasty could be an effective alternative for you. Most women who opt for this procedure are done having children. It is important to realize that childbirth can affect the shape and size of your labia.

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks. In rare cases, problems with bleeding and infection have occurred. Scarring is another possibility. However, the majority of patients are satisfied with results after a labiaplasty procedure. You should discuss your health history with our medical team to determine if you have underlying conditions that could cause complications during your procedure.
